Low Stress Visits

Creating low-stress veterinary visits begins at home.

We understand that trips to the veterinarian can be nerve-wracking for both pets and their owners. At Metrowest Veterinary Associates, our goal is to minimize stress and make the experience as smooth and comfortable as possible for everyone involved. By implementing a few simple strategies, you can help ease your pet’s anxiety and even make the visit enjoyable.

Carrier Training: For cats and small dogs, the carrier itself can trigger stress. Make the carrier a positive space by leaving it out and accessible for longer periods, offering treats inside, and even taking short practice drives to create positive associations.

Car Training: Just like the carrier, the car can induce anxiety if only associated with vet visits. Make car rides fun by taking your pet on enjoyable outings, and consider driving by the clinic occasionally to normalize the experience.

Pheromones: Sprays like Feliway for cats and Adaptil for dogs mimic natural calming pheromones, helping to create a sense of security in carriers or cars. These products can be found in our online pharmacy.

Supplements: Herbal supplements such as Composure and Solliquin can alleviate anxiety. Start using them a few days before the appointment and consider doubling the dose on the day of the visit.

Pre-Visit Pharmaceuticals (PVPs): Some pets may require prescription medications to manage fear. Administer these medications at home before the appointment to ensure a calmer experience.

Muzzle Training: Even well-behaved dogs may need muzzles for safety. Introduce the muzzle at home with positive reinforcement to reduce stress during handling at the clinic. Basket muzzles are preferred as they allow for treat administration.

Stay Calm: Remember, your pet can sense your emotions. Stay relaxed and calm to help your furry friend feel more at ease during the visit.

By implementing these strategies, you can help create a low-stress environment for your pet’s veterinary visits, ensuring they receive the care they need without unnecessary anxiety.
